Ricky RunningHow did you get into your sport: Was tired of cricket which I played for 11 years of my life. Started running with my brother who was doing his first Ironman in 2000, with his old shoes. Then I started to swim when I was 16 at the local pool. Purchased a bicycle when I moved to Australia and entered a triathlon after a month or two of cycling.

When did you start racing as a professional:
I did my first professional race in 2014 at Noosa Triathlon. I work full time as a marketing and event manager for intraining Running Centre working 45-60hrs a week so racing full time is not an option. I changed away from age group racing to increase competition for myself in longer distance events.

Hardest thing about your sport:
Wanting to travel around the world to every race I see on TV!

What does your regular training week consists of:
10-12km of swimming, 150-250km cycling, 20-40km of running.

Best piece of advice you have been given:
“Do the work” (great advice when you are thinking you might miss a session in lieu of watching TV).

Where you draw inspiration from:
When injured, I draw strength from each improvement I make from each training session. When racing, I draw inspiration from others who are competing on all levels. From the greatest athletes like Jan Frodeno and Daniela Ryf through to 80+ year olds still out racing and enjoying the sport of triathlon.

Best motivational tips:
If you are injured or struggling for motivation, the best thing to do is get out and do something you enjoy. Forget the watch, times, power and everything else, and get out there and enjoy the outdoors (or indoors if you are a Zwifter!). The motivation will follow on from your enjoyment.

How do you keep motivated:
Jacqui (my wife), keeps me motivated. If she does a session, then I get jealous and also need to do one.

2018 IN REVIEW

Unfortunately, 2018 was plagued with injury and I did not get to race as often as I would have liked. I was however fortunate to experience a few international races and compete against some of the best athletes in the world. I gained some valuable experience in how to race and am looking forward to a new year which is free of injury. I am currently progressing slowly under the guidance of my physiotherapist to ensure a return to racing strongly throughout 2019.

Highs:
After a short lead in due to injury, I managed to place 3rd overall at the Yeppoon Long Course Triathlon in August with the fastest bike split of the day.

Lows:
Constant recurring injury to my left hamstring tendon, resulting in a chronic tendinopathy. I withdrew from five races in 2018 after injury prevented me from reaching the start line.

What you learned:
After an injury, ensure you ease back into training and allow your body to adapt and strengthen properly. Premature return to racing and training at full capacity when your body is not completely repaired can lead to long term injury and not racing to your potential.

ricky-10Future goals:
I have been working with my strength and conditioning coach as well as my physiotherapist to address a lacking strength in my hamstring. Already early into 2019, I have noted a big improvement in ground contact balance on my Garmin HRM Run monitor. Where previously there was a significant disparity between both legs, already a marked improvement can be seen, with each leg now almost equal in contact time. Whilst no races are confirmed yet, I will be looking to race Busselton 70.3 in May as well as other international events in Asia and Europe for more experience in the professional ranks.
