Intense launches the 2017 Tracer

Ferrari, Maton and Intense all have one thing in common – they are uncompromising in quality, and Intense’s new launch, the Tracer, is no different.

I’ve seen some beautiful bikes in my time, but this takes the cake…..

Redesigned for 2017, the Tracer is still the mountain loving, downhill shredding, racing machine that we have all come to love.  Except now, it’s better.  Intense has redesigned their suspension platform to do all the buzzwords better.  Increased peddling efficiency, more progressive suspension for descents, and a slacker feel.  Coined by Intense as the ‘Enduro Link,’ the upper link of the suspension system is now longer, which in turn ‘optimises the leverage curve’.

The new system on the left, and the old on the right

Now, I’m no mechanical engineer, but apparently ‘optimising’ this leverage curve means aligning both the rate at which your shock compresses, and the rate at which your wheels use up their available travel.  The optimised curve means you can run lower pressures in the shock and that it will be more responsive over the smaller obstacles, and that’s always welcome on a new bike.  To learn more, read up on suspension kinetics.

The other major change for 2017 is the frame construction.  Luckily, Intense understands that we can’t all be ‘1%ers,’ and now provides two options, the standard carbon and the SL carbon, in their carbon range.  The SL carbon has high modulus carbon fibre with some titanium thrown in there for good measure.  The SL version is standard on the Factory, Pro and Elite builds, and is 200 grams lighter.  The Expert and Foundation builds come with standard carbon.

The Tracer is still the mountain loving, downhill shredding, racing machine that we have all come to love.  Except now, it’s better.

The old adage, you get what you pay for, unfortunately rings true with Intense; you will get all the bike you could ever want with the new Tracer, but for 15000 dollars, you could also buy a new car, so the choice is yours.
