Must ride road cycling events in 2018

With the new year almost upon us, it’s time to start booking weekends off on your calendar. There’s a smorgasbord of events scheduled for next year, so here is our pick of the bunch.

Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle Challenge – October 14

The Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle Challenge is a classic Brisbane ride and is a great way to get your first century under your belt. Starting at Southbank and finishing just outside Australia Fair, this ride gives unfettered access to the South East Busways and traffic controlled roads the whole way down to the Gold Coast. The ride comes with the added benefit of raising much-needed funds for the Heart Foundation, a charity which supports vital research into cardiovascular disease.

Great Brisbane Bike Ride + Coot-tha Challenge –  April 28 – May 7

The main event of Brisbane Bike Week, the Great Brisbane Bike Ride is a 110-kilometre tour of the river city, featuring landmarks such as the Gateway Bridge, the Moggill Ferry and the ever popular river loop. Not to be missed is the dreaded Coot-tha Challenge, an optional extra to the ride and a great opportunity to push yourself to the limit.

Noosa Strade Bianche

If retro is more your thing, then the Noosa Strade Bianche is an unmissable event. The Strade Bianche is a tribute to the years of cycling past. To enter you must ride a steel bike fitted with downtube shifters. No carbon fibre allowed. With a range of events from 33 to 162 kilometres, this event is an opportunity to experience the way cycling greats such as Eddie Merckx rode. Alternatively, if you’d rather not ride your prized piece of cycling history, the Vintage Bicycle Show and Shine event is a great chance to show off your work of art.

Sunshine Coast Velothon – July 20-22 2018

The Sunshine Coast Velothon is one of the few public stage races in Queensland. Composed of three stages totalling 362 kilometres of riding, with 5430 metres of climbing, this event is not to be underestimated. With breathtaking views throughout the course, this ride would no doubt be the highlight of your year.
